Questions People Ask Me

1. How does online Hyrox coaching actually work?

After some brief questions and provided we're a good fit we will have a 30 minute consultation call so that I can dive deeper into you, your training history, lifestyle etc. I'll then build your program that you'll access via Training Peaks. Everything is logged in one place & I will check in with you regularly via Whatsapp. We will then have coaching contact calls, ideally a sit down video call, so that we can discuss how to follow, execute and track performance. We will decide optimal times for future contact time at specific stages of your program, in line with training blocks according to your race/goal date.

2. Do I need a full Hyrox set up at my gym?

Ideally yes but I can always program around things that you don't have access to. Fortunately due to the popularity and growth of Hyrox as a sport, many gyms are investing in Hyrox specific equipment. Ultimately the more specific we can be with your training the better. However, I'm very good at programming around and being creative with such limitations.

3. How long before my race should I start with a coach?

16 weeks is a good amount of time to work with. It allows for an 8 week GPP, general preparation phase. Here we will "build the base" focusing on strength, aerobic fitness, volume accumulation and any identified limitations such as mobility. Then the second RSP or race specific phase we can ramp up intensity, focusing on endurance, lactate tolerance and moving efficiently under fatigue. I typically allow 6 weeks for this phase with a contingency or transition week in between and a taper week in the lead up to race day.

4. How much does online Hyrox coaching cost?

Coaching with me is a £150 per month investment and will secure you a devoted coach that works with a limited number of individuals at one time. It's important to me that we develop a great relationship with frequent contact time. I'm not a coach that has 100's of clients on copy and pasted plans. It's a two-way street and I'm devoted to my clients journey and success just as much as they are.

5. What's the difference between a coach and a downloadable training plan?

Accountability, I'll follow up with you to make sure you're executing sessions in the right way. I'll support you by checking in & adapting your program when life stress accumulates. I'll educate you on the specific energy systems we're developing and how the sessions is designed to get the best stimulus without too much fatigue. I program each week based on your last week. I call it adaptive programming and it's tailored to you and you only.

6. Can you coach me if I've never raced a Hyrox before?

Absolutely! People often forget (thanks to Instagram) that Hyrox is inclusive for everybody. As an amateur triathlete I often caution people on getting into triathlon as there are many barriers to overcome. Hyrox however is an achievable and rewarding challenge that is realistic on relatively few hours of training each week.

7. How many sessions do I need to commit to?

I recommend we aim for 4-6 sessions a week depending on training history, ability and goals. Any fewer than 4 and it becomes difficult to see meaningful developments. Ultimately we need 1-2 run focused sessions including steady endurance as well as interval sessions. On the gym session side 1-2 strength specific sessions, 1-2 aerobic endurance sessions and compromised sessions mixing running and station work in the RSP.

8. Do you coach doubles teams as well as solo athletes?

Yes, I have a special offer for doubles teams which is £100 per individual. It's important to note though that the programming is semi-tailored to the individual. Both individuals will have very similar if not the same workouts but may have differences according to their individual strengths, weaknesses etc. Coach contact calls are shared and it's important to bear in mind the logistical challenges here.

9. What happens if I travel a lot or have inconsistent weeks?

I work with many clients with busy & demanding schedules that often require travel. It's very much part of my job to adapt the training plan daily/weekly to your needs. If we have no equipment and only 40 minutes I will work with that and I can be surprisingly creative with challenging bodyweight workouts. In terms of inconsistency we want to mitigate that as much as possible by planning ahead as much as possible. As long as we can hit a specific session well enough to generate a stronger stimulus than the previous attempt then we are progressing. Sometimes we have to stack days around travel and discuss stress management & nutrition whilst travelling. The point is, we adapt to what we have available to us and life ultimately is not optimal. We're trying to make the most out of something sub-optimal and I'm always up for the challenge if you are!?

Who This Is For

This works for busy professionals and parents who can commit to 4–6 sessions a week, with some training experience behind them. It doesn't work for anyone after a plan to dip in and out of. Those looking for quick fixes can walk on by. One thing I'll be straight about: female-health-specific coaching isn't my specialism.
